What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide one receptor antagonist, or GLP-1 RA. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone which is released in the gut in response to eating. GLP-1 prompts the body to produce more insulin, which can reduce blood sugar in the bloodstream. For this reason, Semaglutide has been utilized for more than 15 years to treat type II diabetes.
In higher doses, GLP-1 interacts with the part of the brain that makes you feel full and suppresses your appetite. When used in conjunction with lifestyle changes, Semaglutide can induce significant weight loss. This leads to a reduced risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease for those who are overweight or obese.
In a recent study, around 2000 obese adults were monitored for more than a year. One group was given Semaglutide and asked to incorporate life style changes while the other group was given a placebo and asked to incorporate the same life style changes. After 68 weeks, half of the participants using Semaglutide in addition to lifestyle changes lost 15% of their total body weight and nearly a third of the participants lost 20% of their total body weight. Participants who didn’t receive Semaglutide and only incorporated lifestyle changes lost about 2.4% of their total body weight. Semaglutide has been reliably utilized to help lose more weight quickly.
